James was born 21 March 1833 in Scott County, Illinois to Alfred and Nancy (New) Miller. James died 18 October 1902 in Henry County, Iowa. James married Maria Matilda [her gravestone is Matilda M.] Kirkpatrick in Henry County, Iowa on 4 December 1853.

James Miller farmed in Henry County, Iowa. He was elected Township Trustee of Baltimore Township several times and served for four years as Township Assessor. He was elected to these offices despite the fact that he was a Democrat in a heavily Republican territory. James and Matilda were members of the Protestant Methodist Church.

There were seven children born of the marriage.

Sunday Morning occurred the death of James F. Miller an old well known citizen of Jackson township. the cause of his death was paralysis. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss. Chas. F. Miller of near Pleasant Hill, William and Mrs. Flora Breazeale of Nebraska, and two daughters at home. The funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at Pleasant Hill Chapel. The friends will gather at the home at ten o'clock.
