On the 1930 U. S. Census of Genoa, Lincoln Co., Colorado, Ira P. and Minnie M. Garner appear as hotel keepers of their own business. The index for this was under Iva P. Garner.
Unknown newspaper obituary: Woman succumbs to heart attack on Genoa street. Mrs. Minnie Scifers, 85, a resident of Genoa for 45 years, collapsed and died on the street at Genoa about noon Saturday, April 15. Her death was apparently due to a heart attack. She had not been known to have been ill before the fatal seizure. Mrs. Minnie May Cash Scifers was born May 4, 1881 in Missouri, being one of a family of 13 children. In 1894 she was married to Thomas Jay Smiley and this couple had three children, two sons and a daughter. She is survived by only one son, Emmett of Denver. Mr. Smiley died Jan. 29, 1920. Mrs. Smiley and her son came to Genoa in 1922, where she married Ira P. Garner who died Jan. 31, 1943. Mrs. Garner owned and operated a restaurant in Genoa where she served meals to farmers who were hauling grain to town in wagons drawn by teams of horses, as well as to others who desired such service. This was a thriving business in the 20's and it was not unusual for her to serve more than 100 people a day. A few years later they bought the Genoa hotel where she continued to serve meals and rent rooms. At that time there was a barber shop and a pool hall in the basement. This operation was continued until the death of Mr. Garner. Mrs. Garner was married to John L. Scifers of Arriba April 2, 1945. Mr. Scifers died Oct. 27, 1950. Mrs. Scifers moved to her present home several years ago, where she operated an apartment house until the time of her death. She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren church. She was preceded in death by her brothers, John Cash, Kansas; Earl Cash, Oklahoma; Elmer Cash, Washington and two infant brothers, as well as by a sister, Emma, Oklahoma. Surviving relatives include two sisters, Pearl Lail, Oklahoma; Florence Pickett, California and Arthur and Clarence Cash, Washington. She is also survived by her son, Emmett of Denver, his wife Bertha, four grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and seven step-children. Funeral services for Mrs. Scifers were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday April 18 at the Genoa EUB church with the Rev. O. K. Schlesselman officiating. At the funeral Norma Jane Ewing, Georgia Link, Ellis Allen and Glenn Garten sang, "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" accompanied at the organ by Laurel Covington. Casket bearers were Lloyd Lundien, Homer Hunter, Marvin Hicks, Eric Carlson, Carl Johnson and Elmer Larson. Burial was in the Genoa cemetery with the Buchanan Love Funeral Home making all arrangements.
