James William Kirkpatrick

James William Kirkpatrick, usually referred to in the records as J.W., was born in February 1859 in Alton, Madison County, Illinois. He died on 19 July 1918 in Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois.
James' occupation as listed on his death certificate is 'tile man'. He was in fact a brickmaker, a trade which he learned as a young man. He was for a time superintendent with the Litchfield Brick & Tile Company. He left that position to become superintendent of the brick and tile works in Monticello, Piatt County, Illinois. He continued there for four years, but in 1896 he returned to Litchfield to become superintendent of the Illinois Brick & Tile Company owned by David Davis. The factory manufactured both paving and building brick and drainage tile.
J.W. married in 1881 to Hattie Ringwald, the daughter of John Ringwald. She was born 26 March 1858 in Germany. In 1870 she was brought to America by her parents, who located in Alton. She died 24 March 1924 in Litchfield.
James was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, and was a Republican in politics. Hattie was a member of the Methodist Church.
There were three (3) children born of the marriage.
On the 1880 U. s. Census of Litchfield, Montgomery Co., Illinois, William J. Kirkpatrick is in his father's household with brick moulder listed as his occupation.
On the 1900 U. S. Census of North Litchfield, Montgomery Co., Illinois, James W. appears with his wife Hattie and son William H. James is superintendent of brick and tyle co. and William is a day laborer.
