Charles Allen Hill
(13 Aug 1899 - 23 Dec 1968)
Jennings Daily News, Jennings, Louisiana, Friday, January 10, 1969, Page 1, Cols. 1 & 2: [The column is not an obituary but a tribute to Mr. Hill. It is condensed here]. The fifth fire chief of the City of Jennings was Charles A. Hill, He died on Dec. 12 at the age of 69. He had been chief since Jan. 5, 1944, after being elected by his men on Dec. 14 of the previous years. He was more than a fire chief. He knew all about the equipment owned by the water department and maintained the equipment for the city's two swimming pools and repaired meters for the water department and helped with maintenance of the sewage disposal plant, duties which were not required of him in his position as fire chief. When Saday Manuel was injured in a fire, Chief Hill was a visitor and friend during the months he was in the hospital. Jennings will miss him greatly. He served not just 24 years as chief but had joined the department on Dec.14, 1921 as a volunteer fireman. A member of the First Baptist Church here, Chief Hill was as fine a Christian gentleman as can be found. His kind pass through our world all too seldom.
