John Newton Gillham was born 4 October 1838 in Concord, Morgan County, Illinois. he died 21 August 1883, and was buried with full military honors at Palestine Cemetery, Jackson County, Missouri. In the Civil War, he enlisted on Lincoln's first call to arms. He served as First Lieutenant and Captain in the 101st Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged 15 July 1864 after three months illness in the hospital at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.
