The Maryland Gazette, Glen Burnie, Maryland, Saturday, September 20, 2003: James Mackie Reyback, 81, a longtime resident of Severna Park, died Sept. 17 at Oak Lodge Assisted Living in Pasadena of complications from a stroke. The son of the late Herman and Marguerite Reyback, Mr. Reyback was born April 9, 1922, in New York City where he attended public schools. He graduated from the former Admiral Farragut Academy in New Jersey in 1939 and entered in Naval Academy in 1940, graduating in June 1943 in the accelerated class of 1944.
He was assigned to the battleship USS Maryland where he served in the South Pacific. He then earned his wings at Pensacola, Fla., in 1945. He returned to the Pacific theater where he flew patrols, tracking enemy submarine activity. In 1948 he returned to Pensacola as a flight instructor.
When the Korean War broke out, he was assigned to a squadron in Alameda, Calif., and again went to the Pacific, flying from Hong Kong and other locations. Subsequently, he became an instructor at the Armed Forces Information School. He served tours of duty at Quonset Point, R.I., Casablanca, Morocco, Argentina and Newfoundland before resigning his commission as a lieutenant to work for the former Westinghouse Electric Co. in Linthicum. He attended law school at George Washington University, receiving his law degree in 1968.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Shirley Caroline Reyback; one daughter, Lynn Simpson Reardon of New York City; one son, James Edward Reyback of Annapolis; and one grandson.
Funeral services are private. Burial will be in the Naval Academy Columbarium. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.
