Springfield, Mo.---A former Joplin minister and his wife were killed Sunday afternoon in a car-truck accident near Preston. Killed in the accident were the Rev. Edwin Michael, 75, former pastor of the south Joplin Christian Church, and his wife, Mrs. Lauretta Mae Michael, 57. Also killed were Mrs. Betty Turner, 41, Weston, driver of the truck.
According to the highway patrol, the accident occurred on Highway, 65, about two miles north of Preston, when the car driven by Mrs. Michael collided head-on with the truck driven by Mrs. Turner. Both drivers and Mr. Michael were apparently killed instantly in the crash.
Mr. Michael was living in Springfield at the time of his death. Although retired, he had been accepting interim ministries and was en route to accept a position at the Trenton Christian Church when the accident occurred. He had formerly been district minister of Christian Churches. While in that position, he served in a supervisory and administrative capacity for all Christian church in the 9th district, which included 23 counties.
In Joplin, he served from 1945 to 1950 at the South Joplin Christian Church. Mr. Michael is survived by a son, the Rev. Edwin D. Michael, Dallas, Tex.; a daughter, Mrs. Edwina Beaver, Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, the Rev. James O. Michael, Deer Creek, Okla.; a sister, Mrs. John Hamilton, Citrus Heights, Calif., and five grandchildren. In addition to the children and grandchildren, Mrs. Michael is survived by a brother, George F. Graver, Augusta, Kan.
Joint funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the South Street Christian Church here. The Rev. Bob Gartman, the Rev. Mike McGinnis and the Rev. Lester Rickman will officiate. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Enid, Okla., Cemetery, under direction of the Jewell E. Windle Funeral Home, Springfield.
