The Southern Illinoisan, Wednesday, February 14, 1973: A coroner's inquest is pending into the deaths of a Sesser woman and four of her five children who Monday were found dead of apparent asphyxiation in their home. Franklin County Sheriff Barney Browning said today the inquest will be scheduled as soon as coroner Kirby Webb, who has been ill, is able to return to work. Grace Parkinson, 42, Valerie Jean, 15, Eddie, 12, Wilbur, 10 and Donna, 8, were found dead in their living room about 4:30 p.m. Monday. They apparently had been overcome by carbon monoxide and sulfur fumes from smoldering clinkers from their stoker furnace. The father, Noel, 42, and a fifth child, Carolyn, 12, had been away from home Sunday night. Funeral services for the five will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the First Baptist Church, Sesser. The Rev. John Plunkett will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser. Friends may call at the Brayfield Funeral Home, Sesser, after 5:30 p.m. today. Mrs. Parkinson was born Aug. 26, 1930, in Franklin County, to Elmer and Clara Oglesby Whaley. She married Noel Parkinson in 1957. She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Carolyn; two sisters, Anna Dillon of Benton and Shirley Winter of Denver, Colo.; and eight brothers, Raymond Whaley of Sidell, Charles Whaley with the U.S. Army, Duane Whaley of Blue Mound, Kenneth, Donald, Howard and Max Whaley, all of Benton, and James Dillingham of Rock Falls. The four children are survived by their father, Noel; a sister, Carolyn, and paternal grandmother, Marie Parkinson of Rt. 1, Sesser. Valerie Jean, 15, was born Aug. 27, 1957; Edmond Noel, 12, was born April 13, 1960; Wilbur James, 10, Nov. 16, 1962; and Donna Marie, 8, Sept. 20, 1964. All were born in Franklin County. Valerie Jean's age incorrectly was given as 14 in Tuesday's newspaper story.
