The San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego, California, Sunday, October 31, 2004: Rutherford, Marsahll Lane, Retired Coast Guard Commander Mr. Rutherford was born in La Jolla, California June 1, 1909, and passed from this earth on October 21, 2004 in San Diego. He attended Stanford University and San Diego State College. During World War II Mr. Rutherford was a commissioned Coast Guard Officer serving at sea in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of operations. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation medal with one Bronze Star and the Armed Forces Reserve Commendation medal. After the war Mr. Rutherford retained his commission and served as commanding officer of the Organized Reserve Port Security Units and as Senior Coast Guard Reserve Officer, San Diego, retiring in 1969 with the rank of Commander. He was also employed by Solar Division of International Harvester retiring in 1971. Mr. Rutherford, a long-time resident of Point Loma, was a 32nd degree Mason, a "life" member of the San Diego Yacht Club, a member of the San Diego Coast Guard Officers Association, and served as a business counselor with SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives), for over fifteen years. Mr. Rutherford is survived by his loving wife of twenty-eight years, Mary Esther; three children, Marsha Strieker, Robert Rutherford and Dee Ann Brunner; five grandchildren Stephen Wooding, Jordan Strieker, Roy and Stacy Rutherford, and Allison Brunner; and six great-grandchildren, along with extended family and good friends. Services will be held at All Souls Episcopal Church, Catalina and Chatsworth Streets in Point Loma, at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 7, with inurnment at Fort Rosecrans.
