The Kansas City Star, Kansas City, Missouri, Tuesday, February 23, 1993: Roy O. Bruce, 79, Gardner in Johnson County, owner of a funeral home, died Feb. 21, 1993, at Olathe Medical Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bruce Chapel, Gardner; burial in the Gardner Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel, where Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Gardner Lions Club scholarship fund. Mr. Bruce owned the Bruce Funeral Home and the Bruce Furniture Store in Gardner from 1949 to 1983. Earlier he worked at the Konantz Funeral Home in Fort Scott, Kan., and the Bruce & Stiles Funeral Home in Wilson, Kan. He attended the Fort Scott Junior College and graduated from the Williams Institute of Mortuary Science, Kansas City, Kan., in 1938. He was a 50-year member of the Kansas Funeral Directors Association. He served on the Gardner City Council from 1955 to 1959 and was Gardner citizen of the year in 1977. He was past president of the Gardner Lions Club and the Kansas City Horseless Carriage Club and served on the Johnson County Fair Board. He served on the boards of the Gardner Community Medical Center and the Lanesfield Museum. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion in Gardner. He was born in Fort Scott, Kan., and lived in Wilson before moving to Gardner in 1949. Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Bruce of the home; a son, Larry Roy Bruce, Overland Park; a daughter, Shirley Jean Brown, Gardner; two brothers, Dr. Ralph Bruce, Ottawa, Kan., Kenneth Bruce, Crooked River Ranch, Ore., and Jack L. Bruce, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; a sister, Marie Krull, Mound City, Kan.; four grandsons; and three stepgrandsons.
