Estella Myrtle Rand

(25 Jul 1906 - 6 Apr 1996)

Posted at findagrave.com: Stet was the second of four children born to Rev. Ernest Rand and Myrtle May Emerson. When one of her small siblings tried to pronounce "Estella" it came out as "Stet," and the name stuck for the remainder of her life. Stet's father supplied many churches in Vermont, so she moved frequently growing up.

Stet was a graduate of the Children's Hospital School of Nursing in Boston, Mass., and completed postgraduate work in nursing at Chicago Lying-In Hospital. Her nursing career included supervising and teaching assignments in major hospitals in Boston, New York and Chicago. After several years of private duty nursing, Stet joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II and served on the hospital ship USNA Wisteria, evacuating wounded personnel from the Mediterranean and European theaters to the United States. Stet served in Japan during the Korean Conflict. Her last career assignment was at MacDonald Army Hospital, Fort Eustis.

After her father died, she bought a house for her mother in Randolph Center, and then gave her mother the money to buy antique furnishings for it. As her mother had been the wife of a minister, she had never before owned her own home.

In midlife Stet married Arthur Vincent, a widower with two daughters. They had a home in Williamsburg. Virginia. Later in life after her mother and Arthur had died, Stet wintered in Virginia and spent her summers in Randolph.

A little-know fact about Stet is that she had been the governess for the children of WWI flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker.
