Walter Vincent Head

Eureka Times Standard, Eureka, California, Sunday, August 29, 1993, Page B 8, Col. 2 & 3: Walter Vincent Head died Aug. 25, 1993, in Eureka at age 85. He was a resident at Eureka. Born in Marlborough, England on May 13, 1908, Walter came to Eureka with his parents when he was 5 years old. Walter worked for several furniture stores as a young man, including Duck Brothers Furniture Store. He was a volunteer fireman for 13 years before joining the Eureka Fire Department in 1942. He retired as a lieutenant in 1969 after 37 years fighting fires. Walter was an avid fisherman, a member of the California Trout Association and the California Waterfowl Association. He sometimes said that he would rather fish than eat. He also enjoyed gardening, camping, duck hunting and taking care of his chickens. He especially enjoyed spending time with his sons and grandsons anywhere in the outdoors.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Lynne A. Head of Eureka; two sons and their spouses, Walter D. and Rose Head of Grants Pass, Ore., and Loren and Terry Head of Eureka; two daughter and their husbands, Carole and Arthur Covington of Eureka, and Cheryl and Roger George of Eureka; eight grandchildren, David and Walter Covington, Doyle and Owen Head, Vince George, Tony Saucier, Wendy Chapman and Stephanie George; four great-grandchildren, David S. Covington, Ashlee Covington, Tyson Covington and Anthony Chapman; a sister, Dorothy Sacchi of Arcata; a brother, Reginald Head of Santa Rosa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend graveside services at Ocean View Cemetery, Mon. Aug. 30, 1993, at 11 a.m. The Rev. H. A. "Bud" Tillinghast will officiate. Interment will be at Ocean View Cemetery. Honor guard will be the City of Eureka Fire Department. Honorary casketbearers will be Harold McBeth, Dean Stevens, Norman Stevens, Arthur Covington and Roger George. Visitation for friends will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Mortuary Chapels/Pierce Chapel, Eureka. Memorial contributions may be made to Adult Day Health Care, 1910 California Street, Eureka 95501; or First United Methodist Church, Del Norte and F streets, Eureka 95501.
