Inscription: CPL US Army, World War II.
Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78212, on-line: J. Sid Cunningham, age 85, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2005. He is survived by his loving wife, Jane; and three sons, Sidney of Houston; Fred M. of San Antonio; and William C. of Houston; and a host of friends. Sid graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, TX; attended Texas Christian University and was a World War II Air Corps veteran. As an early member of St. Andrew's Methodist Church, he served several years on the Board responsible for it's insurance program. As President of the Alamo Division of the Texas Insurance Fieldman's Association, his introduction to the insurance business was working in his father's local insurance agency in Dallas during his summer school vacations.
Sid's life long career began in 1939, working in the Texas Insurance Checking Office in Austin. After the war, he moved to Dallas to work for the T. A. Manning General Agency and returned to Austin to work in the Property Rating Section of the State Board of Insurance. In 1947, he was hired by American General Insurance Company of Houston and began a career of traveling the southwest Texas territory as a marketing representative, calling on local insurance agents in soliciting new business and recruiting agents to represent the company. In 1965, in an expansion of the company, American General became a corporation and merged with Maryland Casualty Company, an old, respected nationwide firm. The highlight of Sid's career was in 1976 when he was recognized with the Maryland's Annual "Marketing Representative of the Year" Award. He retired from American General in 1985 on a Friday, and the following Monday became Manager for the Elton George General Agency where his territory ranged from San Antonio to Corpus Christi. In 1990, he was appointed Vice-President-in-Charge of four automobile insurance agencies which were owned by Elton George. Sid retired from the insurance business after sixty-five years of service.
