Carl George Van Buskirk

Herald-Times, Bloomington, Indiana, Saturday, February 27, 1993: Music professor Carl Van Buskirk dies. Carl G. Van Buskirk, professor emeritus of music at Indiana University, died Wednesday at his residence. He was 86. He was born Oct. 14, 1906, in Buena Vista, Wis. He studied at the Chicago Musical College where he received a bachelor's of music degree in piano in 1930 under the tutelage of Rudolph Ganz. At the Eastman School of Music, the University of Rochester, he earned a master's of music degree in composition and the performer's certificate in voice in 1941. In 1946, he joined the IU School of Music voice faculty serving as chairman of the voice department for a decade before retiring in 1971. During his tenure at IU, he wrote his first opera, Land Between the Rivers, which was premiered at IU in 1956. During the next eight years, he completed a second opera, Perfect Doll. Concurrently he was working on various compositions including a movement for woodwind quintet and harp, music for the Singing Hoosiers and the Belles of Indiana, and songs for doctoral voice recitals. In 1971, ''Episodes,'' a composition for harp and concert band, was premiered. He continued to compose during his retirement. His piece for two harps (two keys) and percussion was given its first performance at IU in 1985 under the direction of distinguished professor George Gaber. He received several prizes for his harp compositions. Van Buskirk wrote poetry from 1940 throughout his life and was honored with the publication of a collection of his poems on his 85th birthday. Survivors include his wife, Mazelle (Van Cleave) Van Buskirk; one son, George Van Buskirk of Bloomington; and his wife's stepchildren, Meredith Kirkpatrick of Swampscott, Mass., and Laird Kirkpatrick of Eugene, Ore. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 2, in the Musical Arts Center lobby. Memorial contributions may be made to the IU School of Music, Carl G.
