Mary Elizabeth Mickens

Mrs. James H. Shelley, for many years a resident of this vicinity, died Friday, may 10, 1918, at her home in Overton, aged 62 years, 2 months, and 11 days. Mary Elizabeth Nickens [Mickens] was born in DeWitt county, Ill., February 29, 1856, where she was married Oct. 9, 1873, to James H. Shelley. To this union seven children were born, In 1874, they removed to Jefferson county, Iowa, and after residing there for seven years, came in the spring of 1881 to Dawson county, and settled on a homestead six miles north east of Gothenburg. They later came to this city and after a short residence here removed in the spring of 1893 to a farm north of Lexington and about twelve years later to a farm north of Overton. For several years they have made their home in Overton. Her husband, four sons and two daughter survive her; Mrs. A. A. McKim and Mrs. R. F. Weathers of Gothenburg, Ben and John Shelley of LaFeyette, Colo., Virgil of Cheyenne and David who lives at home. Two brothers, John and William Nickens [Mickens], reside at LeRoy, Kansas, and one sister, Mrs. Martha Wooden, resides at Silvercreek, Neb. She leaves also twenty grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Overton and Sunday afternoon at the M. E. Church in Gothenburg, conducted by the Rev. Arthur Atack. Interment was made at Grandview cemetery.
