James Everman, 66, of 184 North Broadway, horse trainer and for the last half-century a colorful figure in racing circles, died at 10 o'clock yesterday morning at St. Joseph's hospital after a short illness. Mr. Everman a native of Clark county, started his career as a trainer for Hal Woodford, famous Bourbon county horseman. He worked for many owners and turned out many good horses. One of the best known horses trained by Mr. Everman was Governor Gray, an outstanding campaigner back in 1911. That year, Governor Gray was the strong favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, but he ran second to Meridian. For the last several months, Mr. Everman had trained for Howard Wells. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nancy Pharis Everman, a stepson, Jack Madeira of Chanute Field, Rantoul, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Allie Taylor of Winchester, and several nieces and nephews. The body was removed to Kerr Brothers funeral home where it will remain until 1:30 o'clock this afternoon. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the grave in the Winchester cemetery, the Rev. Mark Collis officiating, assisted by the Rev. Hall Calhoun Crowder, pastor of the First Christian church of Lexington. Pallbearers will be Chris Kimbrough, Vernon Kimbrough, Robert Eades, Ernest Eades, Robert Vivian and W. A. Pinkham.
