Della Ann Aycock
(2 Mar 1936 - 1 Mar 2010)
The Eagle, Bryan-College Station, Texas, Friday, March 5, 2010: March 2, 1936 - March 1, 2010 Della A. Pearson, longtime College Station resident, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 1, 2010, one day before her 74th birthday. A special service to celebrate and remember Della, is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at A&M United Methodist Church, 417 University Drive, in College Station. Born, in Daingerfield Texas, Della Ann Aycock, was the fourth of five children born to Curtis and Estelle Aycock, and raised in Dallas. She attended Adamson High School, and for those who knew her, it was no surprise that she was an active participant. She was a member of the National Honor Society, a cheerleader, treasurer, class secretary, and in the Thespian Society. Arriving in College Station, Texas in 1961, with her husband Alan, and daughters Carla and Melissa, Della quickly became involved in her community. In those early years she participated in local politics, was a member of the League of Women Voters, and found herself involved in numerous volunteer efforts including summer reading programs for children at what was then known as the Lincoln School. Della gave of herself. She earned her undergraduate, Master's, and PhD., from Texas A&M. In 1976, she married John E. Pearson, the Dean of the College of Business at Texas A&M University. Shortly afterwards, they moved to Houston, Texas, where she taught at the University of Houston. After John's passing in 1983, Della made a career change and moved to Austin, Texas, where she worked as a Deputy Land Commissioner under the former Texas Land Commissioner, Gary Mauro. She made many new friends while in Austin, relationships she continued to maintain until the time of her death. After 10 years with the Land Commissioner's office, Della retired and moved back "home" to College Station. Della's passions have always been her friends, entertaining those friends, playing music with those friends, and being a part of their lives. She was also committed to making her community a better place by contributing to the Arts, volunteering at Hospice, a Planned Parenthood supporter, and she was member of the Women's Club. All of these things brought joy to her life, and likewise, she brought joy to those who passed through her life. Della was a bright light, touching the lives of many people. Those who remember her are very likely to have their very own "Della Story." However, the following adjectives are pretty good descriptors of this very neat and special woman; entertainer, sparkly-sunglasses-wearer, red scooter rider, Sonic Diet Cherry Limeade lover, gutbucket player, wind-up toy lover, and mom extraordinaire! Her parents and older siblings, Curt Jr., Jackie, and Carl, preceded her in death. Della leaves behind her daughters, Carla Porter Fisher and Melissa Porter; her grandsons, Shannon Michael Porter and Jonathan David Fisher, and her very dear friend, Paul Boatright. Her brother, Jim Aycock also survives her in addition to numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends. The family extends their thanks and appreciation to those who have loved, cared for, and enriched Della's life along the way. May you cherish your memories of this remarkable woman as her spirit lives on in the hearts of her family and many friends. The family has requested that contributions may be made in memory of Della, to the Prenatal Clinic, 3370 S. Texas Avenue, Bryan, Texas 77802.
