East Bay Times, California, Sunday, January 28, 2018: Amiel Pagsuyuin: HOPELESS ROMANTIC, SURGICAL TECHNICIANID'D IN FATALCRASH. HOPELESS ROMANTIC, SURGICAL TECHNICIANID'D IN FATALCRASH.

BRENTWOOD When they weren't working the same shifts, Amiel Pagsuyuin would tell his wife she was beautiful and to kiss and hug the kids before he left for work in the morning.

"He was a big cheeseball, but I loved it," said his wife, Rosie Pagsuyuin.

On Thursday, Pagsuyuin kissed his wife Rosie and hopped in the car to drive along Deer Valley Road to start his shift as an operating room technician at Kaiser Antioch Medical Center, but he didn't make it there.

At 6:50 a.m. on Thursday, the 38-year-old father of three died in a three-vehicle crash on Deer Valley Road just north of Empire Mine Road.

Amiel Pagsuyuin was born in the Philippines, but immigrated to the Bay Area in 1989, just in time for a surprising welcome: The Loma Prieta earthquake. "It scared the heck out of him, but it was his first major welcome to California," Rosie laughed.

Amiel grew up in Hayward and moved to Brentwood to attend Liberty High School. His mother is a nurse and Amiel wanted to work in the same field, so after school he worked his way toward becoming an operating room technician, assisting doctors and nurses during surgeries at Kaiser Antioch Medical Center.

Rosie still remembers when they first met. They both worked at Kaiser Antioch and a mutual friend connected them. Rosie wasn't interested in a romantic relationship, but that didn't stop Amiel.

"He thinks our first date is the day we met," Rosie said. "I still argue. We all went out as a group. It was not a date, it was bowling. I'll give it to him though."

That moment started a romance that hadn't waned five years later. White roses and daily expressions of love continued on through marriage, having children and buying a house.

Amiel Pagsuyuin liked to DJ, drive his motorcycle and collect Air Jordans, which "he had a million of," Rosie said. He had a big family and was also building a big family. He leaves behind a 10-month old daughter, Kaylee, a 4-year-old daughter Cataleya and a 11-year-old stepson, Charles.

"He was very family-oriented. We were everything to him," Rosie said. "He appreciated life so much."

The outpouring of grief and condolences from the Kaiser Antioch staff showed how Amiel was thought of among his coworkers. One friend and coworker started a fundraiser to support Rosie and their three children during this time. That fundraiser can be found at www.gofundme.com/loving-father-husband-has-left-us.

It is the second fatal car crash involving a Kaiser Antioch employee in a little over a month. On Dec. 18, 51-year-old Ivette Montes of Tracy died after fatally crashing her vehicle in the 200 block of Balfour Road, less than a mile from the site of Thursday's crash.
