Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 30, 2012, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Rev. Richard Reed officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Grand Avenue Baptist Church, 116 W. Grand Avenue, Carterville, IL 62918. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home. Opal was born January 2, 1912, in Cambria to George O. and Bessie Mae (Boren) Ragland. She married William Kirkpatrick in 1938 in Chicago; he preceded her in death in 1958. She is survived by her step-son, Noble Kirkpatrick of Oak Park, Ill.; nieces, Toby Eastman of Manton, Mich., Sandra Wehrli of Davison, Mich., and Michelle Gollan of Fenton, Mich.; and nephew, Mark Ragland of Jacksonville, Fla. Opal was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and brothers, Roy, Leonard, Harold, and Clyde Ragland. She was a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Carterville where she served as a Sunday school teacher. Opal worked in the restaurant business for many years. She enjoyed researching genealogy and was an avid history buff. Opal was also a member of the Royal Neighbors. She truly loved the city of Carterville and will be dearly missed.
