Delbert Leo Grubbs

From Jane Grubbs, September 2017: Delbert was in the army in WWII. He was in the 36th Infantry Division out of Texas. He was in many battles in Italy. Delbert and Phyllis worked at the Methodist Children's Home in Mt. Vernon in Christopher. Later Delbert worked as a miner at Old Ben 21. They moved to 15th Street where Delbert's parents has 10 acres. Phyllis, her son Patrick and his family and Jane and her husband still live on that 10 acres.
Southern Illinoisan, Carbondale, Illinois, Monday, January 2, 1995: Christopher---Delbert Grubbs, 70, of 404 W. 15th St., died at 5:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 1994, at his residence. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, with the Rev. Michael Sanders and the Rev. Steve Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in Mulkeytown Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Grubbs was a retired coal miner. He worked at Old Ben Mine No. 21. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the DAV and the Masonic Lodge, all in Christopher. An Army veteran of World War II, he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was born Aug. 12, 1924, the son of David Grubbs and Virginia (Wilson) Grubbs. He married Phyllis Kirkpatrick. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Susan Williams of Christopher and Jane Wink of Mulkeytown; one son, Patrick Grubbs of Valier; and four grandchildren, Jennifer, Jonathon, Tarah and Sarah. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Mike.
