The Advocate, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Thursday, April 22, 1999: Garner, Carolyn Lewis Heymann. A loving mother of three and dedicated arts promoter, she died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at age 71. Born in Alexandria, daughter of Margaret Meginn Lewis and Ralph Edward Lewis, this is a celebration of her life. Artistic, caring, whimsical, animal lover and humanitarian, she devoted her life to the historical preservation of the culture of Louisiana, fine arts and education. Raised in Bunkie, she relocated to Lafayette and resided there for more than 50 years. She studied dance at southwestern Louisiana Institute, now University of Southwestern Louisiana, and later went on to study fine art conservation and preservation at Parsons School of Design. She was a lifelong student of the arts, an ardent tennis player and horticulturist. In addition to these interests, she contributed much of her time to area civic organ- izations. She was instrumental in the formation of Ascension Day School, an active member of the Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association, Daughters of the American Revolution,Krewe of Attakapas and a founding member of the Junior League of Lafayette. Her tireless energy and devotion to these associations, in addition to her good cheer, will be sorely missed. She is survived by three daughters, Claire Heymann of Dallas, Lila Heymann of New York City, and Joan Bergmann of Houston; her sister, Lila Lewis Ropp Sandefur; her caregivers, Emma Serrette, Janet Champagne, Sally Herpin, Rusty Thompson, Zeza Swofford and a host of adoring canine, feline and equine family members. A religious ceremony was held at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Lafayette and a private interment in North Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Association or to Carolyn Lewis Louisiana Historical Preservation Endowment.
