Carroll "Cotton" Bradford Havener

Southwest Times Record, Sunday, June 3, 1990, Page 2 A: Carroll Bradford "Cotton" Havener, 65, of Mulberry died Friday, June 1, 1990, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was a retired basketball coach at Mulberry High School and a World War II U.S. Marine veteran. He was a Purple Heart recipient and was a member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He was a lifetime member of the Arkansas Coaches' Association, the Arkansas Education Association, National Education Association, American Association of Retired Persons, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Mulberry First United Methodist Church. He served as head coach at County Line from 1960 to 1987. His total record was 2,036 wins and 917 losses. He was named Outstanding Basketball Coach in Arkansas in 1987 and was nominated for National Basketball Coach of the year. He was an All-Star coach and was head coach for the West All-Star basketball teams in 1987. He was name Coach of the Year in his district 28 times. On December 15, 1989, the Mulberry gym was named in his honor. He was the widower of Helen Frances Harmon Havener.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church in Mulberry with burial at New Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home. He is survived by three daughters, Carol Lawless of Shawnee, Mikie Wiley of Van Buren, and Susie Cunningham of Harrison; three sisters, two brothers and nine grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Vernon Sizemore, Ray Holbrook, Francis Pitts, Roger Benham, Ricky Napier and David Beneux. Honorary pallbearers will be all Arkansas high school coaches and former Yellowjacket players. Memorial contributions may be made to the "Cotton" Havener Memorial Fund in care of the Bank of Mulberry.
