Individual Details
William Wallace Kirkpatrick
(11 Jun 1837 - 30 Dec 1889)
William was born on his father's farm near St. Charles, Missouri, 11 June 1837. He spent most of his early life on the farm of his father. In 1866 he came to St. Charles and engaged in merchandising, starting a grocery store which he operated for about 5 years. For some years he engaged in the stock business and, to a degree, in real estate, as sidelines. He continued in these businesses and expanded as a leading businessman and property holder in the county. He became a stockholder in the Novelty Manufacturing Corp., the Tobacco Company (where he was also a director), the St. Charles Gas Company, and the First National Bank of St. Charles where he became president in 1884. He and a partner became owners jointly of over 2600 acres of agricultural land. He and his partner, Mr. Stonebraker, are noted in a county history as the only men in Missouri who in 1885 "use traction steam engine gang-plows for breaking up their plow land. By the use of these plows, they have found that they greatly economize both labor and expense, while the plows do better work than ordinary horse plows."*
On 29 November 1866 William Kirkpatrick married Ursula Kestler, daughter of John Kestler of Macon County, Illinois. Miss Kestler had attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles which was where Kirkpatrick met her. Kirkpatrick and his wife were members of the Roman Catholic Church and he became a lodge member of the Catholic Knights of America.
There were three children of the marriage.
