Abram D. Skaggs

Oregonian, Portland, Oregon, Thursday, November 14, 1929, Page 18, Cols. 3 & 4: Rev. Abram D. Skaggs. Vancouver, Wash., Nov. 13.---(Special) Rev. Abram D. Skaggs, 86, civil war veteran, died today at his home here. He was born in Grayson county, Kentucky. He served through the civil war, participating in several of the major battles and was wounded three times. He was captured by the Confederates and spent several months in Andersonville prison.
He came to Vancouver in 1891 and served as pastor of the Christian church for several years. After serving other charges on the coast he retired and returned to Vancouver. He was widely known as the marrying parson and held the record for several years for the number of couples married here. His widow, Mrs. Elmina Skaggs; two sons, six daughters, 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive.

Oregonian, Portland, Oregon, Sunday, November 24, 1929, Page 25, Col. 6: Abram D. Skaggs. Vancouver, Wash., Nov. 23.---(Special)---The last rites for Rev. Abram D. Skaggs, aged civil war veteran, will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the First Christian church of which he was pastor for several years. Rev. H. F. Jones, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will be in Park Hill cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church from 1:30 until the hour of the funeral.
