Joplin Globe, Joplin, Missouri, Saturday, September 25, 1993, Front Page, Col. 2: An elderly Liberal, Mo., man died in flash flooding Friday in Barton County, and a deluge of up to 8 inches forced the evacuation of some residents of Aurora and Crawford County, Kan. In Barton County a search by divers and airplane lasted 2 1/2 hours before the body of Ralph Overstreet, 80, was recovered from his submerged car. Authorities said Overstreet's car became stuck in water on Highway O, south of Highway 160. A farmer tried to tow the Overstreet vehicle out, but a flash flood washed Overstreet's vehicle off the road.
Joplin Globe, Joplin, Missouri, Sunday, September 26, 1993, Page 34, Col. 3: Liberal, Mo.---Ralph L. Overstreet, 80, Liberal route 1, died about 12:30 p.m. Friday in a flood-related accident on O Highway, 1 1/2 miles south of Highway 160. Mr. Overstreet was born Oct. 1, 1912 at Liberal. he was a lifelong area resident. He was a retired farmer. He was a member and first vice commander of the American Legion post in Liberal. He served in the navy and was a prisoner of war during World War II. He married Cleona Briggs on Jan. 3, 1942, at Carthage. She died Feb. 14, 1984. Survivors include two brothers, Herbert Overstreet, Lamar, and Charles Overstreet, Liberal. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar. The Rev. Lonnie Pennell will officiate. Burial will be in the Liberal City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
