Carthage Evening Press, Carthage, Missouri, September 12, 1941: Death of C. P. Bastin, Former Transfer Operator was 70. Heart Disease Takes Long Time Resident of County. Clarence Plez Bastin 70, who had lived in Carthage and Avilla the last 64 years, died at 11:30 o'clock last night at his home, 217 Blanch street. He had been suffering from a heart ailment about a year but had been able to be up and around until yesterday. Mr. Bastin's death occurred four days after that if a sister, Mrs. Emma Root, who passed away last Sunday at her home in Waterford, California. He came to Carthage with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Bastin, when he was six years old from Marysville, Kansas, where Mr. Bastin was born August 4, 1871. Mr. Bastin was in the transfer business here a number of years and later operated a filling station at the corner of Garrison and Macon Streets. He retired several years ago. Surviving Mr. Bastin are his wife, Mrs. Carrie Sterrett Bastin; two daughters; Mrs. H. H. Sterling of Seminole, Oklahoma and Mrs. W. L. Long of Carthage, a son; Clarence Bastin, Jr. of Carthage, two grandchildren; his step-mother, Dora Bastin of West Plains and three half-brothers; Fred Bastin of West Plains, Floyd Bastin of Elmhurst, Illinois and John H. Cook of California. Mr. Bastin was a member of the Methodist church. Funeral services were held at the Ulmer Funeral Home and burial was in Park Cemetery.
