(12 Jan 1927 - 23 May 1980)

Wichita Eagle & Beacon, Wichita, Kansas, Sunday, May 25, 1980, Page 10, Col. 1: Action Was His Credo For Politics. By Denise Magnell, Staff Writer. Charles R. "Dick" Ward was a ;man of action when it came to his longtime involvement in Wichita politics. A Wichitan for nearly a quarter of a century, Ward died Friday of a heart attack. He was 53.

His wife of almost 30 years, the former Delores Williams of Wichita, said he had been active locally in the Democratic party for about 15 years. ward was treasurer of the party's Sedgwick County Central Committee at the time of his death, and had been president of the Westside Democrats. He also was a precinct committeeman. Ward served two terms, 1976-78, as chairman of the Sedgwick County Water Development Committee.
Delores said his philosophy was that being politically active was the only way to get things done. "If he met somebody he thought had something on the ball," she said, he'd really work for him."

Ward apparently applied the same spirit in his work. He was a district manger of Lehigh Safety Shoe Co. for almost 20 years and during the last 5 years, he operated his own business, the Jayhawk Safety Shoe Co.

"It was like a shoe store on wheels, with a display area and carpeting and office, " his wife explained. "He brought his shoe store to the industry." Ward's shoe business took him to Oklahoma, Nebraska, the Kansas City area and throughout Kansas. His sons will continue in the business.

Ward was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Kansas City, Mo. He moved with his family to Augusta as a child. he left high school to join the U.S. Navy during World War II, and later received his high school diploma. He spent a year at El Dorado Junior College.

Ward had been a president of the American Society of Safety Engineers and continued to be affiliated with the group until his death.

Besides his wife, Ward is survived by sons, Charles R. Jr. and Timothy L., a daughter Angela, all of Wichita; a sister, Virginia Belt of El Dorado.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. A service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
