David Goodnight Martin

Posted at findagrave.com: David Goodnight Martin was born on a farm in Franklin County, IL. 16 March 1870; son of James and Augustine Martin, and was one of a family of five children. One of these died in infancy, and one sister, Laura, lived to marry James HAMILTON, and she died several years ago, leaving one son. The two surviving brothers are John C. Martin of Long Beach, and Roy Martin of Highland, California. David married Hattie Jane Kirkpatrick 16 May 1894. There was born to this union eight children, seven boys and one girl. Of these, two, James Eugene and William Ellsworth Martin, died at an early age, and another, Jesse, lived to be grown, married and died several years ago, leaving two young sons. David's surviving children are: Jural Martin, the oldest, Margaret, now Mrs. Harry F. Cook of Sesser; John D. and Townson Martin of Ukiah, Calif., and Leslie Martin of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Martin died 14 June 1912, leaving Mr. Martin with a large family of small children. He reared this large family alone. He was a faithful and loving father to them, a good neighbor and friend. David united with the Horse Prairie Baptist Church at an early age and continued a faithful member there throughout his life. This church is located on a portion of the farm which Mr. Martin owned and on which he had been born and had lived almost his entire life. The last several years, his children all having reached their maturity and left him, he lived alone on his farm. In the fall of 1936 he disposed of his personal property, rented his farm and went to California to spend the winter with his sons and brothers there. One of these brothers, Roy, he had not seen for 35 years. David returned home in May 1937. After a few weeks visiting relatives near his home, he went to St. Louis to visit his sons there. About a week ago he became ill and on July 6, 1937, he passed to his reward.
