Thomas William Kirkpatrick

St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis, Missouri, October 23, 2002: Kirkpatrick, Thomas William, 85, of Hilton Head Island, SC, died Saturday, Oct. 19th, 2002. Mr. Kirkpatrick, the youngest child of Halley C. and Daisy Tucker Kirkpatrick, was born in St. Louis, MO and was graduated from Soldan High School and then Washington University in that city in 1938. A member of Phi Kappa Alpha, he was married to the former Anne More just before he left to serve as a Sergeant Major in the Army in Iwo Jima during World War II 1943-1946. Mr. Kirkpatrick began his business career in St. Louis in retail clothing before moving to Niagara Falls, NY in 1955, where he founded Niagara Credit Services, which later became the largest credit collection agency in the region. In the early 1960's, Mr. Kirkpatrick took over as the Western Area Manager for International Correspondence Schools, supervising a chain of business schools from Scranton, PA to Cleveland, Ohio. He then became Director of the Sawyer Business Schools in Buffalo, NY. In 1973 Tom and Anne moved to Providence, Rhode Island where they purchased the Sawyer Schools and later opened additional branches in Warwick, Pawtucket and Newport, RI. Longtime vacation visitors to the Island, the Kirkpatricks sold the schools and retired to Hilton Head in 1988. Mr. Kirkpatrick was Western New York District Governor of the Exchange Clubs, treasurer of the United Palsy Association of Niagara County and a member of the Greenwich and Galilee Beach Clubs. He was commissioner of the Rhode Island Post Secondary Education Committee, president of the New England Business College Association and an instructor in financial aid workshops for the U.S. Dept. of Education. With his wife, Mr. Kirkpatrick was instrumental in starting the Rhode Island Opera Guild and on Hilton Head he was an avid participant in Hilton Head Orchestra activities, the Community Playhouse and the Self Family Arts Center. Mr. Kirkpatrick was preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by their son, Cory Kirkpatrick of Hilton Head; their daughter, Edwina Drummond of Freedom, NH; two grandsons, Drew and Benjamin of Freedom; and two granddaughters, Sage of Los Angeles and Chelsea, Hilton Head. Mr. Kirkpatrick is to be memorialized during ceremonies at 11:30 a.m., Friday, at the Seabrook of Hilton Head Island. Memorial contributions may be made to the Self Family Arts Center or the Hilton Head Orchestra. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
