Charles Henry Heighton

Charles Henry Heighton, 65, a Seattle lawyer 33 years, former state legislator and one-time Bull Moose Republican leader, died yesterday at his home at Oak Harbor, Whidby Island, In state politics of the 1920's he was known as "Fightin' Heighton." Mr. Heighton had been ill since touring Mexico last April with his wife, the former Lu Ella Stanhope of Seattle. In 1940 Mr. Heighton was director of the United States census for Western Washington. He came to Seattle in 1917.

During the First World War Mr. Heighton was a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was state representative from the 47th District in 1922-24. He was a candidate for lieutenant-governor in 1924 and 1938. Mr. Heighton earned his nickname while touring the state in the mid-20's, stumping for a public-power bill introduced by former Senator Homer T. Bone. During the Second World War, Mr. Heighton was a special attorney for the lands division of the Justice Department.
Birth Was in Ohio
Mr. Heighton was born in Oberlin, Ohio. He attended the University of Nebraska and in 1913 received his law degree from the University of Denver. He entered law practice in Colorado. In 1915-17 he was a prosecuting attorney for Boundary County at Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Mr. Heighton was a member of Masonic lodges of Seattle and Whidby Island. He was a member of the Nile Temple of the Shrine, Seattle Commandery, Knights Templar, and Seattle Elks Lodge No. 92. He also was a member of the Seattle and Washington State Bar Association.

The Heightons were married in 1927. They have a son, Robert Stanhope Heighton, a senior dentistry student at the University of Washington. Mr. Heighton had law offices in the Northern Life Tower and a Whidby Island branch office at Langley. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday in the First Reform Church, Oak Harbor. Cremation will follow.
