The State, Columbia, South Carolina, Wednesday, August 10, 1949, Page 5, Col. 3: Wade Charged With Slaying Chester Man. Chester, Aug. 9---(Special)---A formal charge of murder was lodged against Tellie Wade, a carpenter, today after a coroner's jury named him as the alleged slayer of David Carter, 53, also a carpenter, who was shot to death here last night. Wade, who surrendered to Rural Police Chief, E. L. Bostic and Sheriff James H. Saye last night following the shooting, was released from jail this evening on $3,000 bond posted by his father J. Henry Wade, Chester county farmer, according to the accused slayer's attorney, Robert W. Hemphill. Wade will appear before the grand jury at the October term of general session court. Wade's wife, Mrs. Margaret Louise Wade, comely 36-year-old brunette mother of five children who was one of two witnesses at the inquest, told the jury that she was in Carter's car when he was shot. She testified that she and Carter had been seated in his automobile in the driveway of the Godshall service station, which was closed at the time, for an hour or more before the shooting. She said she did not notice her husband walk to the side of the car where Carter was seated and before she realized it, he had fired the .32 caliber automatic pistol shot that killed Carter immediately. She said the killing "tore me up so" and added: "I wish it had been me instead of him that was killed." The shooting occurred at about 3:30. Mrs. Wade was bound over for the October term of court as a material witness. Chief Bostic, only other witness, told of Wade's coming to the city hall following the shooting and surrendering himself. He said they went to the scene of the killing and found Mrs. Wade standing by the dead Carter, screaming. Officers found two pint bottles of liquor, both partly empty, in the car along with a German automatic revolver, and took some bullets from Carter's pockets. Chief Bostic said Wade was perfectly sober and had fired only one bullet, apparently the only one in the revolver at the start. Wade, who has been married 21 years, was at the inquest with his attorney but did not go on the stand. Coroner Albert T. Henrys swore out a murder warrant following the inquest. Carter, a World War I veteran and well known carpenter of the New Hope section of Chester county, will be buried today. Services will be conducted at 3 o'clock this afternoon from Calvary Baptist church with the pastor, the Rev. Furman O. Kelly, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Carter is survived by his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Helen Carter Yarborough and Mrs. Rose Carter Love of Chester and Mrs. Minnie Carter Love and Mrs. Lunette Carter McCaston of Rock Hill; three sons, David Lee Carter, Jr., of Hinesville, Ga., Lex Carter of Rock Hill and James Blair Carter of Chester; six grandchildren; two brothers, John Joe Carter of Leeds and Butler Carter of Kelly, and two sisters, Mrs. Sumter Minter and Mrs. Howe Gregory of Chester. Mr. Carter was a member of Calvary Baptist church and James Hemphill Post No. 27, American Legion.
