On the 1918 World War I draft, dated 1 June 1917, Walter is living at 1811 Walnut Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. States he is a teamster and supports his mother. He is a naturalized citizen.

1920 at Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin with his mother Minnie. Their last name was indexed as Wesrring.

Four different times he is a patient at the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Milwaukee. The military history section of his file shows that from July 23, 1918 to June 17, 1919 he was a private in Sec. 547 A.A.S. (Army Air Service). Came into service at Milwaukee, Wisconsin and discharged at Camp Grant, Illinois.

1930 and 1940 Walter lives with his sister Dixie Gherke, her husband and son at Sun Prairie, Dane Co., Wisconsin. In 1930 Walter states he is a veteran of World War I. Walter is a laborer on the railroad section.

Walter is on the World War II draft list of 1942.
