Flint M."Cap" Howell

Career educator Flint Morrison "Cap" Howell, 89, a resident of the Washington Odd Fellows Home, died there March 23, 1997. Those who wish may call from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. until noon Saturday at Colonial DeWitt Funeral Home, 19 E. Birch St. The funeral will be a 2 p.m. Saturday at Pioneer United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Parker officiating. The graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Tonasket (Wash.) Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pioneer, Oroville or Ritzville United Methodist churches through the funeral home. Mr. Howell was born Jan. 29, 1908 in Myers Falls, Wash., the only child of Abel Sylvanus and Lillian Rae Flint Howell. His maternal grandfather Mortimer Riley Flint, a Union Army captain during the Civil War, nicknamed him "Cappy" for the 'lil captain." He graduated at 17 from high school in Colville, Wash. He began teaching at Wauconda, Wash., in the fall of 1925 after one summer session at Cheney Normal School and passing the state board examination for a teaching certificate. He returned to Eastern Washington University and earned a bachelor's in 1927 and a master's in 1952.
While teaching in the Okanogan Valley, he met Marguerite Christina "Maggie" Corum. They married in August 1930 and taught together in two room school, including those in deep creek and Newhalem, Wash. They moved to Ellensburg in 1927, and he taught and was a grade school principal for 12 years. After a one-year hiatus from teaching they moved to Ritzville in the fall of 1950. He was a grade school principal and Mrs. Howell taught first grade. They returned to the Okanogan Valley in 1960 and he served as grade school principal in Oroville until retirement in 1972 with 46 years of service in Washington state elementary schools. He was active in Methodist churches in communities where they lived. He was also active in Lions International in Ritzville and Walla Walla and the Kiwanis International in Ellensburg and Oroville, he held several office in the church and local clubs and was district governor of Kiwanis while in Oroville. The Howells moved to Walla Walla in 1981. Mrs. Howell died Feb. 11, 1990. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Linda Howell of Walla Walla; two grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, David Howell of Seattle and Brian and Marissa Howell of University Park, Mo.; a great-granddaughter, Hannah Howell of University Park and numerous nieces and nephews.
