Harold Knox Thurston

Posted at Find-A-Grave.com: Casa Grande Dispatch, Casa Grande, Arizona, 01/18/1965: Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Casa Grande Methodist Church for Harold Knox Thurston, known as "Buck", 67, real estate salesman for the Sun Valley Land Company, Casa Grande, and well known civic and church leader, who died Jan. 16 at Hoemako Cooperative Hospital of a heart attack. Rev. Lloyd J. Ewart will officiate. Mr. Thurston came to Casa Grande in 1959 from Versailles, Missouri, where he farmed, owned a resort, and did contracting work. Prior to this Mr. Thurston made his home in Wichita, Kansas, since 1925, and was employed by Cessna Aircraft Company from 1939 to 1946. Mr. Thurston, son of Edward S. Thurston and Ella Fallis Thurston, was born in Shelby County, Indiana, July 22, 1897. He attended school in Shelbyville. He served in World War I with Battery E. 150th Field Artiller of the 42nd "Rainbow Division" in 6 major campaigns. In 1935 he was married to Susie Adaline Shoemaker, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. George O. Shoemaker of Wichita, Kansas. Mr. Thurston was a member-at-large of Civitan International and was past president of the Casa Grande Civitan Club. He was on the Board of Directors of the Casa Grande Methodist Church, a member of the International North American Highway Association, a member of the Indianapolis and Phoenix chapters of the 42nd Rainbow Divison Veteran's Association, and has been active in Republican politics for many years. Mr. Thurston is survived by his wife, Susie; a son, PFC Harold George Thurston, Fort Still, Oklahoma; and a brother, Audry Thurston, of Shelbyville, Indiana. Friends may call at the Cole and Maud Funeral Chapel from 4 p.m. Monday until noon Tuesday, at which time the casket will be closed for burial. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery. A memorial has been established, in lieu of flowers, to the memory of Harold Knox Thurston, at Hoemako Cooperative Hospital.
