The San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego, California, Saturday, July 27, 2002: Cecily Fleetwood Forbes Garretson, 82, of San Diego died peacefully after a long illness on July 24, 2002. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Brigadier General Frank E. Garretson, USMC (Ret), her loving children: John Garretson, Capt MC USN (Ret), of Farminmgton, N.M., Cecily Parsons, of Poway, Ca., Sarah Jane Zimmerman of Big Pine, Ca., 8 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Born in Kansas City, Mo. her family later moved to Seattle, Wash., where she attended public schools, was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and received her AB degree from the University of Washington in 1941. After WWII she moved with her husband and growing family to Georgia, Viginia, Hawaii, California, and Washington D.C. At each location she became a dynamic force in a variety of activities: she taught and practiced art therapy at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington D.C.; she was Chairwoman of Red Cross Volunteers, in Quantico, Va., she was President of the PTA at John Eaton School in Washington, D.C. A loving wife and mother, she was also a talented artist in a variety of media, producing several hundred pieces which are displayed in homes across the country. She studied eastern philosophy with Krishnamuti and she loved music of all kinds. An avid reader, she loved the New Yorker Magazine, National Geographic and British mysteries. Her family and friends will miss her terribly and will celebrate her life with a memorial service on July 29 at Clairemont Mortuary at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to San Diego Hospice.
