Posted at find-A-Grave.com: John Herbert "Jack" Barthold, Jr. age 91, of Wichita Falls, died Monday, March 29, 2010. "To live in the hearts of others, is to live forever." A celebration of his life, will be held in a memorial service, conducted at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 8, 2010, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church of Wichita Falls with Dr. Isaac Butterworth, Pastor, officiating. A graveside service for the family will be held at Memorial Park in Oklahoma City. Arrangements are under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls. Jack was born November 3, 1918, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, a son of the late Herbert and Hazel (Hicks) Barthold, Sr. He was married to Carol Shaw. She preceded him in death in 1976. He was also preceded in death by his son, Richard Barthold of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1993. Survivors include his daughter, Sydney Barthold of Vernon, Texas; grandson, Steven Barthold of San Francisco, California; and two great-grandchildren, Richard (Blake) Barthold and Loren Barthold, both of Yukon, Oklahoma. Jack served in the United States Navy during World War II. His career then turned to mental health care, first as a business and then as an administrator for a private psychiatric hospital in Oklahoma City; as a surveyor of psychiatric facilities across the United States for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAHO), and he retired from North Texas State Hospital (NTSH) in 2003 after a 26 year career. He served in the capacity of Assistant Superintendent and Acting Superintendent during his services with NTSH. He will be long remembered for his love and concern for patients and staff of the mental health care systems of Texas and the United States. Jack championed and challenged the quality of patient care from the clinical aspect of the organizations to the quality and safety of their physical structures and therapeutic environments. Locally, flower beds were appropriate to the season; lawns were neatly trimmed and maintained; he added personal artwork to the buildings; infection control and life safety code issues became second nature to staff. Patients, their family members and staff of the hospital, all benefited from his touch. Throw in the mix, a man who always remembered and sent cards on birthdays to family and friends, his love of his church, the impact of his career, a mind that never slept, a spunky style, and a good heart, his work will remain long after this writing.
