Charlie Dessie (Porter) Bean was born October 13, 1888 in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas to William Hartel Porter and Mary Malvina "Mallie" (Temple) Porter. She was the youngest of their 8 children. First born was a boy named Charley Sidney who died at age 4. The remaining 7 children were all girls. Since another son did not come along, two of the daughters were named after the older brother who died. Mallie was pregnant with her 3rd child when little Charley Sidney died, so when that daughter was born 3 months later she named her Sidney after the little boy. Then, later, after 7 daughters were born with no son, probably knowing the 7th would be her last chance for a boy, when it came out another girl, Mallie named her Charlie, probably also in honor of the only son who died.
