Minta L. Brisco, 95, of Arroyo Grande died Sept. 4, 1993 at her home. Visitation was held at the Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel in Grover Beach of Tuesday. A graveside service was held today (Wednesday), Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. at the Arroyo Grande Cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. Ehrhardt Land of the First United Methodist Church in Arroyo Grande. The daughter of Melford Bair and Jenette Tarwater Bair, she was born in Simmler, in easterm San Luis Obispo County, March 9, 1898. She moved to the Oak Park District of Arroyo Grande at age seven and went to Oak Park School. She then moved to the Huasna Valley where she completed her education. She married Leo Brisco in 1921 and then moved to Arroyo Grande where they operated the first service station in Arroyo Grande at the corner of Bridge and Nelson streets. Mrs. Brisco also drove a school bus for several years for the Arroyo Grande High School. She was a charter member of the the first Harvest Festival Committee and when her husband she had formerly served as grand marshal of the parade. In addition to the service station, her husband started a road construction business and built portions of Highway 1 in the northern part of the county, and she did the cooking for the road crew on site. She was also a pilot car driver for the construction projects. In 1909, her father-in-law started a wood yard in Arroyo Grande which the Brisco's expanded into the present Brisco Mill, Lumber, Hardware and Gift Shop. Their gift shop in the Village of Arroyo Grande occupies the building which her uncle John Tarwater, a stone mason, helped build. She enjoyed playing bridge on a regular basis. She loved her rose garden, enjoyed cooking, knitting and being hostess for social events. As avid campers, they traveled with the local Hobo Club. She was a charter member of the Arroyo Grande Women's Club, a former longtime active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post No.136, and a charter member of Cal-Shasta. She is survived by her sister-in-law; Marietta Bosch of Arroyo Grande; six nephews and their wives: Lester and Esther Mankins of Huasna Valley, Howard and Aileen Mankins of Arroyo Grande, Harold and Carol Mankins of Arroyo Grande, Bunny and Billie Bair of Huasna Valley, Kenneth and Bernie Bosch of Arroyo Grande, Douglas and Edna Bosch of Arroyo Grande; one neice and her husband: Linda and Dan Giroux of Paso Robles; one neice by marriage: Polly Mankins of Huasna Valley; numerous great-nieces, two sisters, Ethel Mankins in 1991, Lenora Renshaw in 1992 and one brother, Clarence Bair in 1967. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her honor may be sent to the American Heart Association, 1371 Pacific St., San Luis Obispo, CA, 93401.
