Miami lost its mayor and one of its most respected citizens last night when Dr. Marshall E. Burgess died in Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. death came to the 73-year-old physician as the result of a flood ailment after he had been taken to the capital city hospital when his condition grew worse. Elected to the Miami Town Council last sumer, Dr. Burgess' popularity was indicated by the fact that he polled 620 votes to lead all other candidates. During the campaign, Dr. Burgess had said it was his ambition to become mayor of a community and when the new council met for organizational purposes, the beloved physician was named to the town's highest civic post. Only last year he was named to the 50-Year-Club by the Arizona Medical Society, an honor given to doctors who have practiced in Arizona for that period of time. Dr. Burgess came to Miami April 10, 1944 to join the staff of Miami-Inspiration Hospital. He resigned his position there March 31, 1949 to enter private practice here in Miami. A native of Arkansas, Dr. Burgess served for a number of years with the Indian Service. His acquaintances have always described Dr. Burgess as "a good man" and in commenting on his passing have said that many of Miami's families of limited financial means will miss him greatly for he was their true friend always giving them his services without monetary consideration. Funeral services are pending.
