Gilbert Edgar Kirkpatrick Jr.

San Diego Union, San Diego, California, May 30, 1980, page 51: Gilbert E. Kirkpatrick, 67, who had been a photographer-illustrator for Belle Benchley, the late director of the San Diego Zoo, died Sunday in Flagstaff, Ariz. Services were held there and his ashes will be entombed in Greenwood Mausoleum. A native San Diegan, Mr. Kirkpatrick moved to Arizona 11 years ago and was associated with the Navajo Gospel Mission School at Hardrock Oraibi. His grandfather the late, George E. Bowles, was the 1909 commodore of the San Diego Yacht Club. He was the photographer for "Shirley Goes To The Zoo, "a story of his daughter which is still sold at the zoo. Mr. Kirkpatrick is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Shirley Fischer of Olathe, Colo.; a son Stephen of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Phyllis Mountain of Los Osos, Calif., and seven grandchildren.
