Interment will be held in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege with military honors provided by American Legion Post #66 in conjunction with the United States Navy Honors Team. Lynn Merlyn Lemmon, 89 years of age, of rural Holdrege, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. He was born on July 29, 1925 at Cozad, Nebraska, the fourth child born to Benjamin Robert “Bert” and Imogene “Imo” (Melius) Lemmon of rural Cozad. He attended Lucerne Valley Grade School and then Cozad High School, graduating with the class of 1942. After graduation, he continued to work on the farm. He was inducted into the United States Navy on October 30, 1943, where he served on the USS Trapper (ACM-9) in the South Pacific. Lynn worked as a bull dozer operator on the island of Okinawa until he was honorably discharged on May 22, 1946.
Upon returning home from military duty, he stopped at the unemployment office in Lexington, Nebraska, where he met the girl he would later marry. On June 18, 1947, he was united in marriage to Ella Sherman and to this union two sons were born: Jerry Lynn and Randy. The couple first made their home in Gothenburg, Nebraska. The next year, they moved to a farm south of Holdrege, where he would continue to reside for the rest of his life. In earlier years, Lynn served as the Phelps County Judge, Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors, and was a member of the Elks Club, American Legion, and he was President of the Kiwanis Club. While serving as County Judge, he issued former Nebraska Football Coach, Tom Osborne and Nancy their marriage license. When time and circumstances would allow it, Lynn enjoyed hunting and fishing. He taught both of his sons how to pheasant hunt. He also enjoyed fishing at the Harlan County Reservoir and once made a fishing trip to Minnesota. He was very fond of Oliver tractors. He was a lifelong Nebraska football fan and he enjoyed many New Year’s Day celebrations at the farm, with his sons and their friends, to watch the bowl games. In the 1980s and 1990s, Lynn and Ella enjoyed traveling to different cities where their son, Randy performed with “The Country Jukebox Band.”
Lynn had a great sense of humor and when someone he knew asked him how he was doing, he would smile and say, “I’m still alive and taking up space.” The twinkle in his eyes and laughter will be missed by all who knew him.Besides his parents, Lynn was preceded in death by his son, Jerry in August 1981, as the result of a motorcycle accident; two brothers: Dale Lemmon and Bob Lemmon; and one sister, Lois Piester. Lynn is survived by his wife, Ella of Holdrege; son, Randy Lemmon of Lincoln; brother-in-law, George Piester of Minden; nephews: Rick Lemmon and his wife, Tamara of Cozad, Kent Piester of Houston, Texas, and David Piester and his wife, Cindy of Lincoln; and a host of other relatives and friends.Visitation was held on Friday, June 26, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege. The family strongly requests that memorials may be made in Lynn’s honor to the Veteran’s Administration.
