On the 1880 Census of Coyle, Jackson Co., Kentucky Laura appears with her parents John and Elizabeth Lane. Laura was married to the brother of Bessie Hays who was married to Laura's brother James.
Hamilton Journal News, Hamilton, Ohio, Friday, January 7, 1977, Page 31, Col. 7: Mrs. Laura Hays Settle, 96, 732 Franklin St., died Friday at 5 a.m. at Fort Hamilton-Hughes Hospital. Born in Jackson County, Ky., she was a daughter of John and Elizabeth Foot Lane Allen. She received her education in Jackson County schools. In 1901 she married Garfield Hays, and he died in 1913. She married Sherman Settle in 1921, and he died in 1932. She was a member of the West Side Baptist Church and Senior Citizens. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Wesley (Gertrude) Baker and Mrs. Pete (Fairy) Schuster, both of Hamilton, Mrs. Everett (Cecil) Smith, Camden, and Mrs. Edward (Hazel) Ferginson, Miami, Fla.; two stepsons, Mitchel Settle, Coca, Fla., and Hansford Settle, South Carolina; four grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Services Monday at 2 p.m. at the Webb Funeral Home, 240 Ross Ave., with burial in Rose Hill Memorial Park. Visitation Sunday 4 to 8 p.m.
