The Modesto Bee, Modesto, California, February 24, 2006: Helen Cowan (April 1, 1931 - Feb. 20, 2006), 74, of Tracy died Monday at New Hope Care Center. Ms. Cowan was a native of Sallisaw, Okla. She lived in Tracy seven years and previously lived in Hanford more than 40 years. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed listening to her record collection and collecting cows and Santas. She is survived by her companion, Brantley "Butch" Harley of Tracy; daughter, Bonnie Smith of Tracy; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Ruth Whittlesey; and two brothers. Private services. Burial at Hanford Cemetery. Fry Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements. Remembrances may be made to Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library Family Literacy Program, 605 N. El Dorado St., Stockton 95202.

The Tracy Press, Tracy, California, Thursday, March 2, 2006: Services were private for Helen Cowan, 74, of Tracy, who died Monday at New Hope Care Center in Tracy. Born in Sallisaw, Okla., Ms. Cowan lived in Tracy six years. She moved with her family in the 1940s and settled in the Hanford area for more than 40 years. She moved to Tracy in 2000 to be closer to her daughter. She was a hard worker who was devoted to her family. She was also a caring friend to many. She was a collector and among her treasures were her cows and Santa Clauses, and she loved listening to her extensive record collection. Loved ones will miss seeing the world through her baby blue eyes. Ms. Cowan is survived by her children, Bonnie Smith, and her husband, Dennis, of Tracy; grandchildren, Chad Smith, and his wife, Lisa, of Santa Rosa, and April Gonzales, and her husband, Moses, of Lodi; and great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Madison Gonzales, both of Lodi. She was preceded in death by her longtime companion and love of her life, Brantley “Butch” Harley; child, Ruth Whittlesey; parents, Nolan and Bertha Cowan; and brothers, Calvin and Melvin Cowan. Contri- butions in Ms. Cowan’s name may be sent to the Stockton-San Joaquin County Literacy Program, 605 El Dorado, Stockton 95202. Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S. Central Ave., is handling arrangements.
