Amelia Kirkpatrick
(10 Sep 1750 - 16 Sep 1826)
Amelia Kirkpatrick, like Robert Kirkpatrick is (was) and enigma. According to the authors of the book, "A Kirkpatrick Genealogy - The Family of James Kirkpatrick of South Carolina", they were not even absolutely certain that she was a Kirkpatrick. Some have asserted that her maiden name was Lewis or Mulkey or Green. The balance of evidence, however, seems to indicate that she was a Kirkpatrick. The most compelling evidence is her gravestone in the Big Bottom Cemetery in Jackson County, Tennessee, which reads "Amelia Kirkpatrick Scantland." Because we believe her to be a Kirkpatrick and probably a sister of Robert Kirkpatrick, we give what is known of her family and descendants.
Amelia Kirkpatrick was born 10 September 1750 in Stafford County, Virginia. Her parents are unknown, but is is possible and believed that she is the daughter of William Kirkpatrick, and the granddaughter of James Kirkpatrick, the progenitor of the family. She married James Scantland (Scandland, Scanland), possibly the son of Luke Scantland of Stafford County, Virginia. James was born circa 1750 in Stafford County. James and Amelia probably moved to Kentucky before 1800, as we find a James Scanland in Washington County in the 1800 Kentucky census (reconstructed from tax lists). he is still there in the 1810 census. If this entry referes to James and Amelia, they moved sometime between 1810 and 1820 from Washington County, Kentucky to Jackson County, Tennessee, perhaps following some of their adult children and other members of the Kirkpatrick family. Our information about them in Tennessee is scant. About all that we know is that they died there and are buried in the Big Bottom Cemetery. Amelia died 16 September 1826 and James died in 1836. They are reported to have had thirteen children. We know of only seven. All of their children were probably born in Virginia.
There are some who claim Francis Kirkpatrick and his wife Margaret Unknown are Amelia's parents. The web site http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kirkpatrick-53 shows this possibility as of June 15, 2013.
