The Tribune, San Luis Obispo, California, Thursday, January 14, 2010, (1)Edition: Tribune, Page B2: Tom Ashlock, born in July 1929 to Evan Earl and Mary Eloise Emory Ashlock in St. Louis, Mo., passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in San Luis Obispo. Tom graduated from Corona High School and was attending USC when he was called to reserve active duty with the U.S. Navy Seabees in 1950. After his return from the Aleutian Islands, he entered the NROTC program and graduated from UC Berkeley in Civil Engineering. He received a commission in the U.S. Marine Corps and served for a short time with the 2nd Engineers before he was transferred to Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington D.C. After transferring to the Marine Reserves in 1957, he began his professional career. Working for the Bridge Department of the California Division of Highways, Tom designed the Willow Creek Bridge of Hwy. 1 in Monterey County, which won national pre-stressed concrete design recognition. Later, he found his passion in water. He managed agricultural water districts in Kern County and used his 'original thinking' and developed a system of water exchanges (now an accepted practice) and a reverse flow to send water uphill, confounding normal thinking and gravity. Upon his retirement, Tom and GG moved to Cambria. He was an honorable and loving man who had the bark of a Marine, but the heart of a puppy. Tom loved his country but above all, he truly loved his family. When his health barely allowed him to move, he attended all of his grandson Tommy's football games. Tom was survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia Kelley Jewell Ashlock; daughter, Jenni (Joe) Avila and children Shane and Laci; son, Tim Ashlock and children Caitlin, Nick, Becky and Natalie; son Ted (Kathleen McKinnon) Ashlock and daughter, Shannon; daughter, Darcy (Salvador) Moreno and son, Tommy. He is also survived by his sister, Marion Ashlock (Jack) Bradshaw; sisters-in-law Eileen Pauly and Shirley O'Connor; brother-in-law, Karl Janson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. He was "Gringo Dad" to Robert Houghton and Mary Hougnton Hill. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Eloise Ashlock Janson; and son, Baby Boy Ashlock. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Third and Crocker in Templeton, where Tom and GG were members. Tom was always faithful. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, Toys for Tots or the charity of your choice.
