The Herald, Rock Hill, South Carolina, Wednesday, June 18, 2008: Rock Hill---Mary Elizabeth Walker Kirkpatrick passed away peacefully June 16, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center, while surrounded by family members. She was born Dec. 5, 1926, in Rock Hill, S.C., to Franklin Bryce and Maggie Shillinglaw Walker. She was the seventh of eight children. She graduated from Rock Hill High School and was employed by The Equitable Insurance Company and The Bank of Great Falls. Mary married William Donald Kirkpatrick of Great Falls, S.C., on Oct. 29, 1948. They had two sons, William Michael Kirkpatrick, born Jan. 4, 1953 and Carl Walker Kirkpatrick, born June 13, 1957. The family moved to Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1958. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Franklin Bryce and Maggie Shillinglaw Walker; brothers, Jack Walker, Grady Walker and Marshall Walker and sisters, Margaret Walker Loflin, Carrie Walker Adams and Grace Walker Leslie. Mary is survived by her husband, William Donald Kirkpatrick (91) of Winston-Salem; sister, Patsy Walker (Odell) Pettus of Fort Mill, S.C.; two sons, William Michael (Karen) Kirkpatrick, of Mocksville, N.C., and Carl Walker Kirkpatrick of Winston-Salem; three grandsons, Kevin Michael Kirkpatrick of Atlanta, Ga., Bryon Wilbar Kirkpatrick of Charlotte, N.C., and Christian Lloyd South of Winston-Salem; and Hunley, a Golden Retriever of the home. Mary loved the Lord and her family, being devoted to friends and family. Her family was her life. Mary was a true friend to all who knew her and could always be counted on to help out or lend an ear to listen. Her husband, children and grandchildren share a wealth of fond memories about her life. They were blessed with the opportunity to share these memories in the last days of her life. There will be a funeral service at Centenary United Methodist Church of Winston-Salem Thursday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m., with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends and family after the service in the church parlor. Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, Winston-Salem or to The American Cancer Society. The family would like to express their appreciation for the care and compassion demonstrated by the Doctors, nurses and staff of the Neuro ICU and Palliative Care Unit of Forsyth Medical Center.
