E-mail from Ed's wife Ellen Lewis [Ellen May Heatlie Cooke] on Dec. 11, 2016: Ed Cooke was known as Vance until the time he enlisted in the Army. He was assigned to the Quartermaster as an experienced cook at Camp Roberts, CA. When he shipped to Europe he transferred to the 508, 82nd airborne, as a paratrooper. He did 9 combat jumps; was in the Battle of the Bulge (where the bottoms of his feet froze), and was at Normandy, and more. He is buried in the Fairview Church cemetery in Buford, Arkansas. His sister, Alice, placed his ashes (in a bronze box) behind the large tombstone of their parents. There is no marker. Ed died in Mountain Home, Arkansas, Sept 9, 1995, of extensive cancer throughout his body.
