Telegraph Herald, Dubuque, Iowa, Wednesday, March 20, 2002: PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Donald Allen, 81, of Platteville, died on Monday, March 18, 2002 at Southwest Health Center Hospital, Platteville with his family by his side. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Platteville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Rock Church Cemetery, Livingston, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 42 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5274. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bendorf Funeral Home, Platteville, and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church. He was born on Nov. 30, 1920, son of Mort and Luetta (Burgess) Allen, in northern Wisconsin, where they farmed for many years. He married Lenice Ludwig on Oct. 1, 1949, in Platteville. He graduated from Livingston High School. Don was a Navy gunner during World War II and after that he worked for the railroad for a number of years. He retired from the Platteville Telephone Co. after 34 years. Don enjoyed fishing and spending time with his morning coffee group at Hardees. He was a member of the VFW Post 5274 in Platteville, and the United Methodist Church in Platteville. Don was very much loved by his family and will be greatly missed. Surviving are his wife, Lenice, of Platteville; three children, Duane Allen, of Carmel, Calif., Barb (Jerry) Nicholson, of Platteville, and Kathy (Jeff) Richardson, of Platteville; six grandchildren, Aaron Allen, of New Mexico, Nathan Allen, of Madison, Cheri (Jeff) Bengsch, of Milwaukee, Lisa (Stan) Banfield, of Cuba City, Toni (Shannon) Plowman, of Dubuque, and Rachel Richardson, of Platteville; a great-grandson, Brandon Plowman; three sisters, Emmeline (Gordon) Brun, of Livingston, Dorothy (Homer) Harris, of La Crosse, and Ruth (Clayton) Weittenhiller, of Platteville. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Walter and Keith.
