Vernon Lincoln Mardis

The Hawk Eye, Burlington, Iowa, Wednesday, May 5, 1999: Vernon Lincoln Mardis, 84, of Keokuk, died at 11:30 P.M. Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Keokuk Area Hospital. Born Feb. 12, 1915, in Keokuk, he was the son of Elmer and Rose Hart Mardis. On June 15, 1935, he married Gladys E. Kirkpatrick in Monmouth, Ill. She died May 14, 1996. Mr. Mardis was a lifelong resident of Keokuk. He worked for Union Electric as a meter reader for 32 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He enjoyed traveling, woodworking, gardening and playing cards. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Clark of Carthage, Ill., and Barbara Shaffer of Orion, Ill.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Mardis of Davenport; several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, two brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today in DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Mardis will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in DeJong's Funeral Home, with the Rev. Phil Nevius officiating. Burial will be in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage. A memorial has been established for First Christian Church of Carthage.
