Polk died at 1:50 a.m. Monday, July 13, 1992, at Graham Hospital in Canton. Born Dec. 13, 1911, in Smithfield to Andrew E. and Lulu Howater Black, he married Reva Coakley on June 26, 1937, in Delavan. She survives, along with two daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Karen) Schlabach of Glen Ellyn and Mrs. Kenneth (Diana) Williamson of Henry; two sisters, Mabel Miller of Smithfield and Opal LeMaster of Cuba; and four grandchildren. One infant son, four brothers and one sister preceded him in death. He worked at Rowland Triple S Mines in Cuba and Augusta. He later worked as a machine operator at Freeman United Coal Co., retiring in 1974. He operated Bill's Volkswagen Repair Shop in Cuba. He was a member of Cuba United Methodist Church, Fulton County Farm Bureau, United Mine Workers of America and was past master of Cuba Masonic Lodge. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at his church. The Rev. Craig Sweet will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8:30 tonight at Hukill-Henry Memorial Home in Cuba, where a Masonic service will be at 7:30. Additional visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Cuba Cemetery. Memorials may be made to his church or Spoon River Hospice Association.
